Well with your definition underlined, it still doesn't support the OP's assertion, as every phone i know of that shoots HDR, does so with a jpeg output. Not exactly a smart way to get away from what engineers chose.

Well, then, you don't know too very many phones or much about them, in general.

The iPhone shoots HEIF, which has (a) a higher bit depth (16-bit) than JPG, (b) can store a depth map and HDR metadata, (c) and has support for stacked images (animations), all while sporting a higher compression efficiency.
