Need help with 6D using flash - never get the exposure right!

I use a Godox TTL in a softbox at an angle, and a manual slave Yuongo for a little sparkle from the side at a small angle.  Every photo I shoot looks overexposed at the faces on angles reflecting the flash especially for those standing nearest the softbox!

Steps I take when shooting:

1. Set camera to: use center weighted, focus point to center, M mode (so everything but the flash will be variable).

2. Focus at the center persons face with a half click until I hear the beep.

3. I recompose and full click.

Is the problem with how the TTL only takes the measurement and sends it to the camera which calculates the exposure  after I recompose? How do I tell the camera the exposure I want from the flash is the one on which did the focusing on?

Thanks for your help!
