My suspicion is that you would have had other manufacturers more interested in perpetuating the status quo float the myth that mirrorless was insurmountably intrinsically inferior -- as an excuse to stay the course -- and a sizable proportion of their respective user bases, facing high switching costs and in the throes of wishful thinking, readily embrace that school of thought.

However, when Sony's juggernaut/endless cavalcade of ever-more-capable alpha cameras quite brutally eviscerated any hope they might have had of using that excuse, the laggards had little choice but to hop on the "if you can't beat it [mirrorless], embrace it" bandwagon tout suit.
