Ken_in_NH rightly observes that what is "best or most convenient" is context-sensitive: in situations where ease of movement is prized, your laptop would be of greatest utility. At the desk in your home study, many desktop monitors are more than adequate. No Eizos or NECs required.

Read the reviews and create a shortlist based on monitors that meet your color uniformity, contrast, accuracy, and resolution threshold. Given sample variation, bring it home and perform a final "screening" test. It's not rocket science.

I often transition between my Macbook Pro, Surface Book, Surface Pro 7, and desktop monitor. Good calibrated/profiled laptop screens are more than suitable for color-critical work.
