Actually, making a 1" sensored rugged camera would fill a much needed demand for something better than what is currently available.

SONY already have, and it's quite expensive!

cathal, I've owned the RX10i, (&RX1i), TZ100, and I currently have the RX100iii, and am on my 2nd FZ1000i

These are good cameras, and YES,  they are expensive.  What I've seen is that the Lumix ones depreciate much faster than Sony's.  Typically the sony equiv end up 2x more $.  But also you tend to get what u pay for.

The reviews are consistent in finding lens quality control far better on Sony than Lumix.  The FZ1000 had a lens that was w/in a hair as sharp as the RX10.  While not as handsome, and apparently less robust, it was a better camera in virtually every respect than the RX10 Mk1.  Faster, 4k, better stab, better EVF, better AF, better ergo's & UI, better menus.

But then Sony blows us aways w/ the 24-200f2.4-f4!  And of course the intro of OSPD.  Meanwhile the lumix competitors have sort of faded... although STILL GOOD VALUE FOR $
