I am currently shooting with my D850 on a 500mm f4.

To get more "reach" i was wondering how beneficial is a D500, in terms of the crop factor.

So, my actual question is:

If i crop a shot from my D850 to DX format/size, does it has the same quality as a D500 shot? Megapixel wise they would be then very equal then?

Can somebody do the math? Am i forgetting something?

Thanks!

The DX crop in itself gives no reach obviously, it is just a smaller sensor that doesn't capture the full FF view. If someone believes otherwise, I have a nice 2 Mpix Nikon D1H to sell you

Optical magnification and pixel density are the defining factors in "reach." Longer lens, teleconverter, or more pixels, or all three would be the optimal solution.

What D500 brings to the table is slightly increased viewfinder magnification and slightly increased frame rate. The DK-17M can do the viewfinder magnification to your D850 and then some. Works well with my D810 when I use it as a "dedicated DX camera."
