Olympus is acting under pressure from ValueAct Capital.

Under pressure from an activist shareholder . It seems the article was removed by a moderator. The post by Henry Stamm quoted a paragraph from the Wall Street Journal.

"Wall Street Journal gives a reason for the sale"

"The Tokyo company [Olympus], which has been under pressure from U.S. shareholder ValueAct Capital to improve shareholder returns, said Wednesday that it planned to sell its camera unit to private-equity firm Japan Industrial Partners Inc. It didn’t disclose financial details. The companies aim to complete their deal by the end of the year."

Fuji had it's own problems with Xerox not so long ago and Fuji fought back.
