Because the other option , rather than film , was glass plates ( wet or dry ) or tintypes etc

.

Rolls of film or film cassettes were just so much more convenient . Having a roll you could just pop in the camera in daylight and remove just the same , then drop it off at a lab or the chemist to develop and sometimes get your prints back within the hour !

Then digital came along and people dumped their film gear and you could upgrade your gear to what was very expensive gear for not a lot of money .

Likewise expensive professional medium format and large format came down to a price where hobbyists could afford them .

So now I have lots of gear I could only dream of using , let alone owning , 30 years ago .
