Thanks guys for the lengthy writeup.

It sounds like the 85mm RF is worth the upgrade price. Especially if I want to use it for studio work - the improved AF and optics will make a real world difference.

"The difference in performance and optical quality (image quality) on the RF 85mm lens makes it the hands-down best choice of the two. Yes, you can get away with the EF version but you'll soon consider it a slow lens. It won't be an issue unless you're shooting moving subject though."

"If you are using either of these lenses for portraits you may not feel a need to "upgrade" to the RF versions at all. The EF lenses will continue to perform for you and your images will look as they did coming from a DSLR."

Ive used both the EF and RF versions of these lenses for my professional portrait work in and out of studio. Save a ton of money and get used EF versions is my advice.

If I wait on the 50 (I have some manual 50's that are good enough for now), and get a used R and used EF 85 my cart is now below $3k.

That seems much more reasonable.

By the way, I'm moving to Canon from Fuji. So much of this will be funded by selling off my Fuji gear (I'll keep some of it).

When I switched from SLR to mirrorless, I went with Fuji over Sony or m43.

Now that Canon and Nikon are in the game, I'm switching from Fuji to Canon for my more serious work and m43 for a smaller carry-around setup.
