My favorite part of MI, is the UP, specifically, Mackinaw Island and Silver Lake Sand dunes..

@OP- These are great spots as well for photographic opportunities.

Neither of these is in the UP.

Mackinac Island is, of course, an island between the Upper and Lower Penninsula's.

Silver Lake is near New Era, MI about an hour or so north of Muskegon on Lake Michigan. A good four hours from the bridge (referring, of course, to the Mackinac Bridge as anyone from Michigan knows).

Mackinaw or Mackinac are both correct depending on usage. Mackinaw City, for example is with a 'w' while Mackinac Island is with a 'c'. Both are pronounced Mackinaw.

Now, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is an amazing place for pictures in the UP.

Considering that I live 30 min north of Detroit, anything not surrounding metro Detroit I consider the "UP"
