When using Photoshop File Info the program tells me that my FX200 pictures have 180 pixels per inch. My new FZ1000 photos also have 180 pixels per inch. What gives? What am I missing?

While it's true that the "normal" resolution data is absolutely meaningless, sometimes there might be another resolution number in EXIF. My Canon SX50 jpegs, for example, contain this data:

Focal Plane Horizontal/Vertical Resolution: 16393 dpi

It's a pretty high resolution, let's see what does it mean:

16393 dpi = 16393/25.4 dpmm = 645.39… dots per millimeter

(image width: 4000 px or dots) / 645.39 dpmm = 6.1977673397 mm

According to DPReview.com, its sensor size is 6.17 x 4.55 mm, so that's what it means.
