Without this turning to a debate on whether using a lens designed for a full frame sensor on a crop body is a good idea, I’m curious about where the extra light from the image circle goes in a crop body.

It falls off the sides of the sensor and hits other parts of the interior.

Are there issues related to that excess light affecting the sensor and/or any image issues? Does the camera just absorb this? If so, does that mean extra heat into the camera body?

Yes, but in most cases, the amount is too small to be a problem.

Which is painted matte black and often has baffles to avoid any reflection back to the sensor.
