Set your metering pattern to Spot, if you can
1

I have found that setting the metering pattern to Spot enables the S1 to amplify the exposure value as needed to brighten the area at the selected AF, thereby ensuring sufficient detail for the contrast AF system to achieve accurate, quick focus. Strangely, this seems to only work with Spot metering, but if you set exposure manually via histogram and/or zebra stripes, as I do, your workflow won't be terribly impacted.

Using this technique, I have absolutely no complaints about AF-S speed or accuracy on the S1.
