all of those calculation don't amount to much photographing the moon (i am not sure shooting the sun). i have used my canon 600mm f4.0 II bare and with TC 1.4/2.0 III but lost detail considerably. if you have the 5Ds/R, i'd use 100400 I or sigma/tamron 150-600 lenses but then to look at detail, you have to make serious cropping--using your 5Ds, you have that heavy cropping capability. here is a moon shot with my bare 600mm f4.0 II lens that you see decent detail after a lot cropping:

Great photos. Wish I could afford something like the 600mm 4.0L II. Given the budget, will have find some “creative” solution. Something similar is perhaps the 800mm 5.6 AI-S from Nikon, or a 400mm 2.8 AI-S to be used with a TC301.

Between the 150-600mm Tamron or Sigma and the Sony 200-600mm the price difference is still manageable, given that the Sony is arguably a better lens. The problem is I will also need another camera to use the Sony lens, either a Sony Alfa or a Nikon Z with adapter. Though something like the A7R II could be handy to use Zeiss AF lenses or Sony’s own GM lenses.
