Quick update.

  • I got the EM1iii from Amazon - and will keep (since I dinged falling down it’s not even a choice anymore.... but had already decided to keep it)
  • size and weight are fantastic. It’s feels far closer to the GX9 than I would have guessed and noticeably more compact and light than the G9. For me, this mattered, I’m not saying the G9 is “heavy”.
  • The grip is fantastic. I was worried it might be a tad bit less comfy than for most because of my huge hands. But no, it is wonderful to hold and handle.
  • I haven’t had a flip out screen since a Canon powershot 12y ago. Personally I don’t care for it and I was surprised to find that it annoys me that I cannot flip up the screen easily. No biggie though.
  • The camera works and handles beautifully well with the PL 50-200. I have no doubt that dual IS on the G9 would be even better. But for me it’s plenty good enough with body or lens only.
  • AF is far far better than GX9
  • CAF in photography still doesn’t blow me away though
  • shame that Oly doesn’t have more/better body and animal detect stuff in. I do hope they will add this via FW.

Honestly, the only disappointment really is just the EVF. It’s perfectly fine to work with. But compared to the S1 it’s just a joke. What a pity, otherwise it’s a near perfect camera really

I’m still obviously discovering and learning and I’m still getting used to Oly colors. Feels a hit more flat SOOC than Lumix but I’m not sure how much of that is just what I’m used to after so many years just on Panasonic.

That is all solid and reasonable feedback. I have a G9, and GAS makes me look at the Oly, but each time I think of the EVF trade down, combined with having the Nocticron and PL 200 for dual IS and I realize I need to wait for a bigger step up before really giving in to GAS.

Some people, including engineers at olympus prefer having constant 120 fps over higher resolution EVF. I think they have their valid technical reasons beside economics to keep the same LCD EVF.

Having tried the eos R and Nikon Z6's EVFs, I can tell that I will stick with my em1.2's EVF until high resolution EVF's can keep up their refresh rate. The eos R and Z6 EVFs have that jumpy feeling when panning because they're only at 60 fps and drop down further in CAF and there's also a noticeable lag. Not sure about the G9, Haven't tried one extensively, but it seems the OLED panel is identical to those of the Canon and Nikon but with different pincushion optics. It's maybe even the same supplier who makes those 3 million dots OLED panels.
