One drawback, the noisiest shutter sound in town? Not so good for birds. So what are the problems with getting the more silent sound? Not to be used in general?

Feel free to use the silent electronic shutter most of the time instead of the mechanical shutter. The potential disadvantages of the e-shutter are:

  • cannot use it with flash;
  • moving subjects, especially moving from side to side across the frame, can be distorted;
  • under certain artificial light, especially fluorescent or LED, you can get horizontal banding or stripes in the image (I understand this can be reduced or eliminated by using a shutter speed that is a multiple of the AC electric frequency in your area, so in Europe where the AC frequency is 50 Hz, use 1/50, 1/100, etc.);
  • can't use e-shutter for panorama shots; and
  • you can't use a shutter speed slower than one second.

Other than that, the e-shutter works fine, is silent, doesn't put any wear on the mechanical shutter (use of the e-shutter does not add to the built-in shutter count of the camera), you can go up to 1/16000, and it avoids any potential for shutter shock.

Thanks, should be the only explanation I need! Not so important WHY it's so loud, but strange anyway....
