Why would anyone want to risk breaking the camera's usb connector just for charging? Are the external chargers that big and bulky?

I prefer to charge my batteries externally so I can use my camera while a battery is charging (without a cord dangling).

Its not about preference, it's about need. Many a times a battery dies on you while you are on the field or on a trip and you miss shots because you need to turn off the camera while its charging. And you may ask, why not get multiple batteries? depending on what you are doing multiple batteries are not enough (and are expensive) or the swapping process gets in the way.

but to be fair, you've been able to do this for ages now.

having a built in USB-C port with on the fly charging at the same time as usage, is more convenient, but it's certainly been around for ages, the ability the run your cameras from external DC power sources. just about any camera can do that.

I dont think that's a solution for people out of the house, hehe.

Again look at my example, I don't want to have to swap batteries because it takes too much time,l and hassle, so changing the battery to a dummy batter doesn't solve that problem.

Its much, much simpler to simply plug a cable from the side of tu our backpack and plug it into your camera.

sure it would. for many use cases, ie: long exposure night photography, etc where you would need more than one battery AND switching battery would be very critical and very problematic, the solution has existed for decades.

Any solution where you are actually hand holding your camera and it's to hard for you to swap batteries, but it is not more of a pain in the ass to actually work around a USB cord, the camera tab, potential of ports exposed to dirt, moisture, etc. It also seems like a very narrow use case. I mean, swapping a lens would be as inconvenient.

like I said, built-in USB-C charging is more convenient, but to suggest it's the ONLY way of doing that implies that people must upgrade their cameras to get around this. But there is also risks with this too. batteries usually fail when they are charging. Charging one in a camera isn't always a good idea either.

I dont see how you would use a power plug outside of the house, but if you say there is a way I'll trust you.

I have had dc adapters for my cameras for years that use USB power. I've probably been using powerbanks before you even thought of the idea

Besides, do we really have to depend on DIY solutions?

why is it a DIY - you buy it. things you buy, are not DIY. Even your Sony's have a port at the battery door - just for this purpose. If it was "DIY" I'm sure your Sony's wouldn't have the port.

Powering something via USB is and should be standard for all electronics. Why are we even defending its omission?

Huh - I'm not?

but there's more than one way to do the same thing. I mean what part of "USB-C charging is more convenient" did you not perhaps read?

Complaining about USB power not being on an existing camera does what exactly?

I'm actually though, not fond of the battery being charged while in-camera at all, but that's different than powering the camera via USB.

I'm also not fond of communication ports open to the environment. there is a reason they have a covering on the camera.

I also find it more reliable to have the connection to power coming from underside of the camera, versus the side.

So while you may not like it, there's certainly pros and cons to each solution.  Which is why, that even today, Sony's with even their secondary USB-C power port, still have a door covering on the bottom for a DC powered battery adapter.

Also before USB type-C connectors having USB powered devices was always problematic. how many times have phones with mini usb plugs just given up and died? I can't count how many phones I just tossed because the usb plug failed. Granted, that was before USB type C. But to be fair, USB-C while more reliable, isn't orders of magnitude more reliable - only twice more than mini USB.
