Re: Checksums, Lightroom, DNGs, and Do We Need Them?

Good question. I only have two categories; 1 star and 2 star. The 1-stars are the backup shots, family, friends, dogs, trips, and shots used for compositing, sky replacement and whatnot. The 2-stars are my personal best.

For the 1-star photos I'm willing to risk 10 or even 20 percent of them getting corrupted or otherwise unusable in 20 years. For the 2-star photos as close to 0 percent risk as possible. We're talking 40,000 1-star images and maybe 200 to 300 photos that fall into the 2-star catgory.

Before going into details, one must decide what exactly he wants and what risks he is willing to take.
