Checksums, Lightroom, DNGs, and Do We Need Them?

I read recently that one of the few, or possibly only way to get checksum validation with photo files is to convert images to DNG and process them in Lightroom and ACR.

The capability appeared in LR5.

Or are there others like Silkypix or Capture One that also use checksums?

If it is true that the Lightroom/DNG combo is the only game in town does this make it worth the downside of switching to an all-DNG workflow where you lose the ability to use first-party software?

Or is checksum an outdated technology, the stability of photo files is already good enough, and I shouldn't worry about it?
