Why would anyone want to risk breaking the camera's usb connector just for charging? Are the external chargers that big and bulky?

I prefer to charge my batteries externally so I can use my camera while a battery is charging (without a cord dangling).

Its not about preference, it's about need. Many a times a battery dies on you while you are on the field or on a trip and you miss shots because you need to turn off the camera while its charging. And you may ask, why not get multiple batteries? depending on what you are doing multiple batteries are not enough (and are expensive) or the swapping process gets in the way.

Typically my spare battery is kept charging in my backpack, the time that it takes me to take everything off to pick up the portable usb charger out of the bag and swap batteries i missed the shots i wanted. Meanwhile my phone was fully operational on the side of my backpack plugged to a powerbank. I thought to myself  "damn, i wish my camera could do that!"

What if you have a tripod plate on the camera? even worse. What if you want to film on location without spending the battery? impossible.

There's many advantages of being able to power a camera through USB. Breaking the USB connector isn't really likely, just like with phones or laptops, you're not waiving the camera around like a maniac
