Started taking photo classes and almost all involve students giving and receiving critiques.

This is totally new to me and I find it very uncomfortable to give and receive critiques.

What are your experiences and opinions on it ?

I find critiques invaluable, especially if it conducted by someone who knows what they are talking about. But in any case it can be very interesting to see what others see in your photograph(s). Sometimes there are real surprises as the viewer takes off in directions you never considered.

That said, it can be uncomfortable and you need to have a thick skin. Consider the source and don't argue.
