Yes, it should work at f/8 (and wider).  Starting at f/9 it will only focus on the first shot in a burst.

I'm not sure what else to suggest.  I don't have the same lenses as you, but I've had good luck shooting portraits with the A7RII and my Sony 85 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.8.  If you can see the eye AF box lagging behind, it must be sometime in your focus set up.

Are you using the latest firmware?
