I got some good results even with the earlier version of this lens. For me, the trick was to avoid AFC which can't really keep up with the motion, stick with AFS, and in the Custom menu turn on "Half Press Release". This means when you half-press the shutter the camera will attempt to focus as usual, but as soon as it locks focus it will take the picture - no need for the human to decide to press the shutter the rest of the way down by which time the bird will have moved out of focus.
