What limits future firmware updates to Z cameras?
2

We've seen some very good firmware updates for the Z cameras so far. Still, focusing lags behind the best competitors. I wonder how far the current cameras can be improved before hardware limitations kick in? That is, maybe the CPU is less powerful than, say, the best Sony, or the speed of memory, or even other hardware? Or is it "just" the software that needs further tuning? Obviously we will not get better dynamic range than we have through firmware updates, but other functionality might still improve with firmware updates.

This is relevant thinking ahead to future purchases (personally I have a Z7). Some people here say they are waiting for Z8/9 or whatever they will be called, but I'd rather get a free firmware update and spend my money on glass.

Thoughts?
