Zebras good way to protect highlights?

Do you use zebras in your viewfinder, or do you use histogram, or what to protect your highlights? Just curious what your favourite method is and why.

I would like to start protecting my highlights more and admire the work of this guy: https://youtu.be/LUtlZ3sahz8 (Sean Tucker). However, he advocates a fully manual approach with taking test shots and looking at the histogram a lot. Of course, the histogram is great, but most of my shooting moves too fast to primarily be in Manual mode. I thought it might be better to find a faster way that I might master without needing to change my shooting style too much.

Any thoughts on best way of protecting highlights without slowing things down too much would be greatly appreciated.
