I just had a peek on eBay, Canon 5D lowest average is $200-$300 (2005 Technology)

Canon 5Dii lowest average $500-$600 (2008 technology)

Sony A7 lowest average is $400-$600 (2014 technology)

So there isn't much difference, but you get a much better platform for adapting legacy manual lenses, and it gets him into a current leader ecosystem vs one that might be phased out soon. Able to adapt 99% of legacy lenses vs 40%(an estimate) of the lenses that can mount to EF, the ability of adapting rangefinder lenses is by its self very compelling, WYSIWYG + histogram + zoom + Peaking + zebras vs a focus screen that might be accurate.

Isn't Sony threatening to get out of the camera business?

Since when? You'll have to provide evidence to back that claim, I'd be more worried about Olympus right now since they are closing down photographic operations in South Korea.

####Where's my FF NEX-7 ?????
Firmware request:
-A button map for toggling the EVF & LCD
-Still waiting for the minimum shutter speed with auto ISO for my NEX-7 and A7r. I know it will never happen.
-Customize the display screen layout, I'd love to have both Histogram and level at the same time.
-More peaking options, being able to set peaking sensitivity and a threshold level.
-An RGB overlay on the histogram
-An option to return the focus assist zoom to one button press
-An option to return to how the NEX-7 handled playback, ie. center button to zoom, then you could use the control dial to zoom in and out, then center button to exit the zoom mode.
