Canon options

  • Canon can stick to the original plan and hope the numbers are still as predicted. I doubt it (Last financial report had no guidance so plans have changed)
  • Increase the price to cover the drop in units sold.
  • Reduce the price and hope these bargain hunters will also buy RF glass to offset the loss in profit.

Stick to the original pricing plan, accept that fewer units will be sold, and reduce production so you don't have excess inventory.

Canon also has to think about fixed costs though, it's not a matter of just producing and selling fewer units. More unit sales will contribute to fixed costs.

Reducing camera production is a thing that Canon has done before:

"In Imaging System, the level of camera inventory was high due to a slowdown in sales. We will, however, work to improve the level of inventory by the end of the year, adjusting production as we closely watch sales trends..."

Canon financial document, October 28, 2019

Pre-virus, Canon had been moving more camera production from overseas to their automated/robotic Japanese factories. It seems inevitable that they will eventually cut costs by closing an overseas camera factory.
