Both use contrast focus, so I quickly turned to burst shots and plenty of patience to get shots that were in focus with either camera.

I am not sure that a larger box can be termed a gimmick even if you found its implementation in the FZ87 less than satisfactory. I did switch to the FZ330 myself though the short reach and narrower field of view is a downside.

I am just warning that trying to get a flying object in the small boxes on a Canon is difficult and any clutter in the image makes using the only alternative which is the whole image difficult in my particular environment. If that is OK for you and others fine.

As I said worth researching at least before committing for anyone looking in to choosing between the two.
