No question the EF 100-400 mk2 is a fantastic lens and if you can get the job done with 400mm then it is probably the best choice for you. If you find you often need more focal length, I suggest you are fooling yourself if you think cropping the images from the 100-400 will give you as good as or better results than the Sigma.

Plenty of test shots under controlled conditions available on the web which show how much sharper the 100-400 is. The Digital Picture, for just one example. For best results, shoot bare lens (without teleconverter). People swear by 100-400 & 1.4, but it's best when used as designed - at 400mm.
