Since you don't care too much about video then EM1mkIII all the way.

One simple reason - PDAF.

And why carry a bulky DSLR sized G9, totally defeats the whole purpose of going m43 imo

Yup. That sums up my thinking too.

This is your call but Dennis arguments do not make much sense

First of all , there is a big percentage of m4/3 users who do not want / need a large m/3 cameras but those people would look at both the Em1 and g9 as bulky bodies. So the small size difference is not going to transform the Em1 a small camera

No, not a small camera but noticeably smaller I think yes. At least judging from size comparisons and reviewers comments. Heck, you can fit a Nikon Z6 in between the Em1iii and G9 size and weight wise!

For what it's worth, here's the weight comparison (body only):

  • GX9: 450g
  • Em1iii: 580g
  • G9: 660g
  • (S1: 1 kg)

Volume wise, the Em1iii is actually much closer to the G90 than the G9.

It's not a small camera no, but that's why I have the the GX9 with just a small prime for that purpose.

as for the pdaf this is not an issue on something like 99% of your cases

Honestly, you're likely right but at the same time I am curious to try and see it for myself.

i can GUARANTEE you you will miss WAAAY more pictures because of something in the complex Olympus menu you did not master that because of the lack of the PDAF in the G9

You are not only already a Panasonic user but a S1 owner, which is a camera which had VERY similar ERGONOMICS as the G9. This means you would get able to operate the camera within a matter of few hours

More like instantly really. And there are particular things I already know I would miss, such as near/far shift (mapped to the wheel on my S1) and setting the ISO limit easily with one click and the wheel.

Remember though, all I am considering is trying the Oly first. Worst case scenario: if size/weight is negligible, PDAF marginal and handling much worse for me, back it goes then. I'm sorry if that offends some people but it's 2020 and, unfortunately, I have no option to rent it here (I checked).

Finally, I want to say that , whatever you are an Olympus user or a Panasonic user, and shooting handheld with longer focal lengths DUAL I.S is really a game changer. In other words , if i was using an Em1 i would get the zuiko 40-150mm instead of the 50-200 mm. When i was shooting wildlife when often , you cannot find some kind of support it makes a HUGE difference

I am very curious about this. Just to be clear: for you wildlife means serious wildlife in Africa - for me it's a seagull on the beach or a deer in the mountains. In my case, I can't even remember having used the 50-200 at low light where slow shutter speed would have made sense. Usually it's during day, decent or bright light (Spain beach) and fast (<1/200) shutter speed.

So I have trouble seeing why Dual IS would be such a big deal? It is super helpful while composing, no doubt. But for that, even just the OIS on the lens is more than good enough from what I can see on the GX7.

Finally, why would you prefer the 40-150 on an Olympus body? AFAIK this lens isn't stabilized, so you get IBIS "only" on the Olympus body. That would be the same scenario with the Leica on an Oly body (except that I could choose lens or body), wouldn't it? Given that the Oly body is generally considered to be best in class and "7 stops" (on paper), I really don't think it's an issue/difference?

I choose the Leica because it's slightly smaller, lighter, and longer than the 40-150 (and it happened to be available as a very good slightly used Amazon Warehouse deal).

i know you said money is not an issue but you could use the smaller cost of the G9 to get the battery grip

I've never felt the need to get one tbh.

it makes NO difference to me which camera you buy’. I am just writing this last post to prevent you making the wrong choice. The olympus is a very good camera and maybe a better choice for some , but not in your specific case.

I really appreciate your thoughts! It actually helps me to clarify in my head what's important to me. It's a pure luxury anyway, I don't need this for sure.

What I want is something that can cover kinda everything (the GX9 doesn't) while being juuust large enough to hold the 50-200 comfortably. I considered the G90 too but the AF seems much closer to the GX9 than G9, so no, even though the size looks perfect. First world problem for sure...
