In the menu go to Custom Settings (cog wheel)->A3 . The topmost option is the focus limiter. It gives you three different settings. If the option is greyed out, it means that the lens focus limiter is active. The switch there has to be in the middle position (so limiter off) for the in-camera limiter to work.
