I'd draw a distinction between having lenses and carrying lenses. I don't think I've ever traveled with more than three--but selecting the right three for the trip means having more than three to choose from. And of course, for home/local work you don't have to be that parsimonious about what comes with.

Three lenses is the sweet-spot for me as well. More than that, and I spend too much time thinking about lens changes. That's what's so appealing to me about the new DFA21: I can see the 21, 43 and 77 combination being my go-to kit for most situations. I'm not holding my breath, but getting updates on the older limiteds - especially weather sealing - would be great to see.
