It seems that in terms of sharpness, 16Mp sensor without AA-filter is close to a 20Mp sensor with AA-filter, and 20Mp sensor without AA-filter is close to a 24Mp sensor with AA filter (not existing in µ4/3 world today). Moving from 16Mp to "20Mp"is not a big difference, but the change 16Mp to "24Mp" might be worth it.
G85 is a great camera.
If you have a pro lens, moving from a gx7 to a GX8 is a big jump. I have both. Going to an em1-mk2 from a GX8 also made a noticeable difference in sharpness and ooc jpg quality (again, I have both).
It is possible that no difference would be noted if using an inferior lens. IE. The test lens needs to be better than the best sensor/camera.
Adrian, your last sentence would seem to make sense, as would Jeff's statement that sharpness is generally down to the lens.
BUT, take a look at the previous post, comparing GX7 w/ 12-35 vs GX85 w/ 14-140.
I know that it doesn't pretend to be a scientific test... but the superior sharpness of the GX85 w/ the super zoom is conspicuous! And it was shot (almost) wide open, vs the the 12-35 stopped down.
Hi Rashid, my statement wasn't meant to infer that it wasn't possible to see a difference if using standard lenses (personally I think that the majority of m43 lenses are excellent in that regard). And I am so impressed by the Panasonic 14-140 that I use it instead of my pro lenses for general walkabout. However there is a marked difference in the image quality when on my 20mp cameras compared to both my 12-35 & 35-100 and if I have been lucky enough to capture something really exciting when out and about, when back home I always then wish I had taken the pro lenses (but of course I didn't want the inconvenience when setting off).
Now there could (probably) be something else going on here. [I believe he used E-shutter, so prob not S Shock]
Yes I have no idea why that is happening, but there could be many 'user' factors at play (I accidentally knocked my Stabilisation off when out today).
As much as I love the GX7, it did rank much lower than contemporary m4/3 bodies according to DXO, something confounding to its fans (including me:-)
There is much I like about the gx7, but realised it must have had a really strong AA filter when I bought a very expensive Voightlander prime lens and the test images were not sharper or better in anyway than the kit 14-45 zoom!
However although only 12mp the original G1 produced images with far more' bite'.
Interestingly The PL100-400 also produces sharper images on the original G1 (& it's only mechanical shutter and no IBIS) than when fitted to the dual IBIS GX8 with its electronic shutter!
