Help with camera as webcam for online meetings

Hi everyone,

I posted this in the accessories forum, but it was suggested that it might be better in the digital video area:

I'm trying to connect my camera to a Macbook (recent model with only Thunderbolt 3 ports) via a USB video capture box.

It doesn't work if I go from the capture box to my Macbook with a USB 3.0 Type-A to Type-C cable (rated for high speed data and certified by Apple). The Mac simply does not recognize that a camera is connected.

But it does work if I use the supplied USB 3.0 Type-A cable plugged into an adapter dongle I already had.

Can anyone help me understand why it doesn't work without the Type-A to Type-C dongle? I'd prefer to simplify the connection and looking for a single-cable solution.
