X-T4 for family/moments/light landscape
May 13, 2020
Hi Fujifilmers!
I have a FujiFilm X-T1 since 2013. I’ve already invested in the 56 1.2, 23 1.4 and 10-22 (besides the old 18-55 kit) over the last few years. My original intention of buying the camera and lens was to take casual portraits and do some light landscape photography.
Since then, my situation has changed. I’m expecting a baby at the end of the year and I’d really like to work on improving and taking better pictures of family and casual moments. I’d still like to work on landscape photography in whatever spare time I’ll have available. Would love the group’s feedback or recommendations based on my options below.
Option 1: Keep the X-T1. It works fine, but is missing a number of improvements vs. the X-T4 across everything from sensor to image quality, to IBIS and more. I may not need those improvements if I just want to take baby photos/family photos at home. I assume I’ll start to feel the gap over time though, especially with auto-focus, IS and more.
Option 2: Buy the X-T4. It’ll be a big jump in many ways and (from what I read) breathe new life into my 56 1.2 and 23 1.4 given their challenging focus speed and shakiness under not perfect conditions. Bonus question: Also not sure if I should go for the body only or add on the 16-80. I have so far resisted anything longer than the 56mm, but I figure with a baby to plan around, I’m likely not going to have the space/interest to carry around multiple lenses and a walk around Like the 16-80 might be helpful. I also figure a longer length might be more useful as the kid grows and might not always be at an arm’s distance away.
Option 3: Goodbye Fuji, hello Sony? Another, more radical option is to completely divest from Fuji and go towards either the Sony full frames for the larger format, super fast autofocus and similarly high image quality. This isn’t my preferred option because recreating a whole lens portfolio is costly, time consuming and will involve a lot of options. But curious to know if folks see advantages of this that I don’t?
Thanks for reading through the long post! Would love your thoughts!
