Before I ask my question, let me start out that I have an Oly E-M10.2, a P12-60, and a P20 f1.7 II. The 12-60 has basically lived on my camera since I got it last summer. I'm in the market for a telephoto zoom and have researched a few options. I enjoy shooting landscape, travel (currently living in Europe) and wildlife (moving back to CO later this year).

I've been eyeing the Oly 75-300 II currently on sale for $399 at B&H. Alternatively, there's the P45-200 II for $448.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm only a hobbyist and don't have a need for Pro level glass at this point in time. With that being said, I'm looking to spend no more than $500, and at $150 off regular prices, the 75-300 II seems like a good bargain.

Thoughts?

Given anything above say 200mm requires mastering a good technique I would say go with the 75-300ii. Might not be optically on par with the Panasonic 100-300 but the difference isn't big enough for me to justify the extra weight and size.

Others' mileage varies of course.

100-300mm II f4-5.6 -

Dimensions: (ø x L)2.9 x 4.96" / 73.6 x 126 mm, Weight: 1.14 lb / 520 g

75-100mm II F4.8-6.7 -

Dimensions (ø x L)2.72 x 4.59" / 69 x 116.5 mm, Weight: 14.92 oz / 423 g

So, the 100-300mm is only 100g heavier but also 1 stop faster on both ends of the range.

It’s also possible to buy a third-party tripod foot for the 100-300mm, which makes it balance much better on a tripod and handle better using a monopod. It can be ordered from Rudolf Roesch Feinmechanik in Germany for about $100. It’s well worth the expense.

Of course mileage varies. As for image quality I have seen great images pulled out of the 75-300.

For my own needs 100 grams are a sufficient saving.

Cheers
