Thx RLight, very impressive and really grateful for the effort put in this review. Adding comparisons to previously owned cameras is really key to your review and really appreciated.
Myself, looking for a dedicated compact camera, one that can 'mimic' my relatively 'old tech' but still good FF Reflex (Canon 6D Mk I) while surpassing my smartphone which is more or less best-in-class for photography (iPhone 11 Pro Max), I found that most compacts have whether the same unpractical buttons as a smartphone or do not elevate the image quality by a significant margin to justify having a dedicated compact camera vs a smartphone
Following your review, waiting for the G1X Mk IV .. if it can be a 'pocket 90 D', that would be terrific! Mid 2021?
Thx again RLight!!!!!
I think the Mark IV could be much sooner actually. The technology exists for the Mark IV, right now. I suspect Q1-Q2 next year to your point. They'll come out with an IBIS APS-C and probably will have a non-IS lens to go with it and instead rely on IBIS since IBIS does well for non-telephoto focals anyways. Allows them to squeeze a yet "faster" optic into the same body, but maintain IS-capability. That would be a sweet gig (32MP APS-C IBIS + 15-45mm f/1.8-3.5 lens). There was a patent not that long ago for Canon-IBIS in PowerShots, and I find it no coincidence the drawing they used was that of the PowerShot G1X Mark III.
Until the Mark IV comes out, I'll be enjoying my existing G5X Mark II.
I should've never sold the G1X Mark III btw in hindsight. The G5X Mark II fits my shooting style better, but I did enjoy the results of the G1X Mark III better and it was a more "fun" camera. These modern PowerShots are pretty good though (G1X III and G5X II), I can't complain about either truth told; they fill the important niche of having something on you at all times that isn't a smartphone, is more capable and engaging.
Here is the link for Canon's patent on IBIS.

I just put my order this morning for G1X iii.
Expected delivery May 12
Hopefully it will exceed in performance my G7X ii.
It won't exceed it by leaps and bounds, but it's the best you can buy presently. The only downside is you can't truly pocket it, like you can the G5X II (or G7X III), but the G1X III will beat my G5X II in terms of image quality, but not reach. It'll win in video though (the G1X III).
My vote is if you want the best point and shoot you can buy...
If pocketable : G5X II
If not: G1X III
If you are trying to do sports with a pocket shooter: RX100 VII
BTW: There is another patent, similar, that outright shows a Powershot G1X Mark III for the IBIS patent
Oh, I do recommend disabling the continuous AF when you get it (enabled by default). It hampers peak resolution, but does help autofocus speed.
It's not a problem on DIGIC8 cameras, but is on DIGIC7's (like the G1X III).
Right.
What I'm going to do is test G1X iii, as much as I'm capable of, against my G7X ii in low light stills and video, pocket-ability, DR, picture clarity and sharpness, etc.
if there is not much of an improvement - then I'll return it within the 30 dats period and wait for the next iteration of G1X series or something else.
Funny, I already took the dimensions of G1X iii and compared it to my bulky G15 and they are almost the same size.
I even put my G15's into my pocket to see if it bothers me. No, it does not.
I remember your recommendation and will disable the Continuous Focus".
Also, I find that my post editor Exposure X5 shows a lot more grain in Raw CR2 files and it does not clear it enough for me. In fact the SOOC JOEG has a lot less noise when in Exposure X5.
Don't know why and I'm not experienced in post processing, but I'm curious to see the RAW from G1X iii inside the Exposure X5.
If nothing works better than G7X ii, then G5X ii will come with the new CR3 Raw file using Canon's DPP.
Any recommendation on a good post processor, non-subscription ?
