Re: I may charge my G16 battery and take it out again

The G16 has two features, image stabilization and three shot focus bracketing,  that are very modest by today’s standards but I guess were competitive In 2013.    I have not found either one very effective, particularly the focus bracketing,  but I haven’t done any explicit testing. I have kept the IS on when I shoot but I don’t see much impact.

Do any G16 veterans have anything they can share?

I have been spending some time during this quarantine break getting to know my Olympus TG-6, which has a sensor slightly smaller than the G16.  It makes use of its tiny sensor to have a Microscope Mode which has 1 cm minimum focusing distance, focus stacking, focus bracketing and digital magnification.  Lot’s of fun but it is very hard to see the LCD in bright sunlight as you try to get up close and personal with an insect.  I got frustrated one day and took the G16 out instead. It’s lcd is actually better for viewing in bright sunlight and if you can get your eye on the viewfinder (not easy when shooting at ground level) you can compose your shot much more easily. Image quality was also competitive with the TG-6.  However, without the TG’s electronic shutter and Microscope Mode (macro shooting with focus stacking is great), the G16 is not as capable. Canon has all the necessary technology;  a G17/G18 could have had all these features!
