My next camera should have the ability to recompose while maintaining focus. No one talks about this, and I don't really get cameras configured right to do this in camera stores.
You pique my curiosity. I think I’m going to try using the tracking AF with my backyard birds next time we get some decent weather. I’ll just move the camera itself around and see if it maintains focus lock.
One thing that even the best tracking AF won’t help you with however is subject motion blur, since you aren’t panning the camera with the subject. So shutter speeds better be d@mn high (this goes for people-shooting too). Kinda limits the utility IMO.

Hopefully the subject is stationary after recomposing. Case 1: You focus with a fast lens on Joe's enormous pimple, when move him to the side of the picture while still keeping his pimple in focus. (This is the classic focus and recompose.) Case 2: A hummingbird stops. You focus. You move the camera, keeping him off to the side but still in focus so you can show other birds that have arrived to challenge him. Case 3: A hummer hovers for a second in front of a flower/feeder off to the right in the field of view. You have the focusing spot over there and you focus and shoot. The bird suddenly moves to the flower and starts feeding. You can still keep him in focus and shoot again. Well, you get the idea.
I did have fun over the holidays shooting family and friends using the face/eye detect. Haven't had a chance to try it with the new firmware though.
Birds flit around so darn quickly. I'm quite curious to see how far the AF algorithms have come. I'll report back if/when I get a chance to test.
