The 17/1.8 that I owned was as sharp as is typically expected for this lens. No worst, no better. Mine was purchased new for the purpose of theater stage photography as well as some landscape photography. For theater, I needed a lens that performed well, wide open, as well as stopped down for landscapes & I wasn't happy at all with it wide open. Stopped down it was lightly better but still not as sharp as can be found in other lenses. There was no defects with this lens. It's just widely accepted as not being the sharpest knife in the drawer. That is just the nature of this lens.
