Since you brought him up, Oskar saw the advantage of instead of using the 18x24 vertical perf pulldown like cinema cameras, he could run the film horizontally and double the area to 24x36. In the 1950s Paramount realized the limitations of anamorphic CinemaScope and developed Vistavision, which runs motion picture film horizontally and creates “flat” widescreen using a gate aperture of, you guessed it, 24x36.

The John Wayne western “The Searchers” was one of the first films shot in the new format. Normal cine lenses couldn’t cover the entire frame, so they shot it using adapted Leitz rangefinder lenses.

I know how to use Photoshop so if I need a different ratio, I’ll handle it in post.
