Sweet spot?

MooSafari wrote

I wonder if anyone knows the "sweet spots" for the Canon lens?

24mm (8.8) sharpest @ f/3.5-4 (corners sharpest @ f/3.5)
33mm (11.6mm) sharpest @ f/5
60mm (21.6) sharpest @ f/4
70mm (25.2) sharpest @ f/4
120mm (44) sharpest @ f/3.5 (corners sharpest @ f/5, but center loses quite a bit)

Of note, the edge sharpness at 8.8mm (24mm FF equivalent) gets most of it's improvement by f/2.8 and all the focal lengths are better or best at f/3.5 if all you care about is sharpness without respect to depth of field or light gathering.

One would still be wiser to use f/1.8 at 8.8mm in the dark, or likewise f/2.8 on the long end in the dark, than suffer the noise/ISO penalty though.

I have noted, many samples posted here use a shutter speed unnecessarily too high causing more ISO than needed for static scenes (landscapes). Reducing the shutter to a more "sane" value would improve things quite a bit in terms of the samples thus available.

Av and Tv are options, not just P and Auto is what it tells me

P and Auto will favor higher than necessary shutter speeds on Canon's, in my experience resulting in higher than necessary noise and noise reduction.
