Today, I received my new Laowa 2:1 macro lens. I had ordered it directly at Venus Optics. I had traded my Laowa 60 mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra Macro FF lens for it.
The lens was tested by Opticallimits (see this thread). The verdict was a "stunning performer with just a few minor weaknesses."
Thanks God I am currently on vacation so I could test a bit my new family member rightaway on a sunny day in April. My first impression is great, defintely a step up in several aspects. This is a super slim and lightweight lens where APS-C owners really can take advantage of! Looks like great sharpness. Nice bokeh. Solid build. I don't like the haptic and mechanism of the lens hood but this is more a detail I can live with. Could be the lens is not so good w.r.t. flare (1st impression, no sample photo shared here) but this remains to be proven.
Dandelion, Laowa 65 mm 2:1 Macro, f/5.6, handheld, SOOC.
Grape hyacinth, Laowa 65 mm 2:1 Macro, f/5.6, handheld, SOOC. As far as I am concerned, I like the bokeh.
Rosie, Laowa 65 mm 2:1 Macro, f/5.6, handheld, SOOC. She is always hard to photograph not only because she's shy (you cannot touch her by no means) but mainly because she's so black! (...It's even worse when she's together with her husband who is just white). Focus was of course on the eye. Bit hard light today.
Cheers,
Martin
