I also agree with those recommending reversing the hood when you want to store the lenses in the bag. If the bag is still overcrowded with the hoods reversed, you need a larger bag rather than giving up your hoods.

When my camera strap broke and my D500 with 300 PF and TC14 hit the ground last year, the lens hood hid the ground first and was bent (replacement cost around $50CAN,), but the lens was OK (replacement cost would have been several thousand $CAN).  No contest! And I also agree with reversing the hood if nec. in the bag.
