What shall I choose?
Both of these lenses meet my requirements ...

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR
Tamron AF 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD

But which is the best quality and gives the best (long distance) photo? I already have several Nikkor lenses, but none over 140mm.
Maybe there are other (not too expensive) options around 3-400mm?

Does it need to be an all in one solution, I'm guessing you have the 18-140 already? It would in all likelyhood be better to add a second lens., Maybe this is not an option.

I'd go the Tamron for the extra length, never had it, but a friend did, his photos were always nice but he is a very good photographer so probably worked inside the limitations of the lens, just be aware the d3500 (which you might have 😄) is superbly capable with good lenses

Okay ... Many people write that the Tamron 18-400mm is of inferior quality than Nikon's 18-300mm? How much extra magnification does the last 100mm give on Tamron? (Incidentally, the price of these two lenses is the same).
