AF with my R, 400 DO II & 2X is far better than both my 5D4 and 7D2. I have to continually pump the BBF for the DSLR's to try and coax them to AF. With the R AF just snaps in. The draw back is the the EVF lag which takes time to get used to.
The Lag and frame rate is the reason I would not use the R as a birding or action camera. It may be doable, but certainly not for an everyday setup.
If I were a working pro and relied sports/BIF images for my livelihood then yes I would use a DSLR. I have said many times I will never miss MFA. I rented a community college to MFA my 400 DO and 2X I get crisp shots from any distance.
Also, I was never impressed with the results of the 7D2 and I went through 4 of them. I actually get pretty good results with the 5D4, 1DX and 5DSR... even though the 5DSR is slow.
The R is not a full birding/sports camera but people are doing a lot of nice work with it. When the R5 comes out the R will make a nice second camera for landscape/walk around, etc.
I’m anxiously awaiting the R5 and 5DV if they decide to release it. Perfect specs for my needs. However, there is typically a downside. I’m just hoping it’s not to bad.
Yes I'm wondering about the EVF lag. Hoping it improves. The R has a High Speed Display option for that but it only works with RF lenses. Also exposure simulation has to be enabled. I'd like to see Case numbers and 1st and 2nd priority options for AI Servo back. Spot focus as well all though I rarely use it. It is there if needed.
