Re: Want to go back to a Canon Powershot, which one?

I bought a G16 on eBay last December and had problems with it. Got a partial refund and bought another one also on eBay that had the original packaging and was in "like new" condition. But it had some of the same problems (freezes up when started up in PSAM modes) but I learned how to get around them and took it on a trip to Asia in January.  I can't post images right now but I got some decent ones.  The controls are very good. I could exposure bracket +/- 2 stops and do HDRs in Lightroom.  For landscapes, there was sometime some visible lens imperfections and sometimes a bit too much noise but for a P&S introduced 7 years ago, it was pretty good.  General images of a street or building or small group of people were actually very good (love that deep DOF at wide apertures). Certainly good for travel.  OK,  the optical viewfinder is obviously not great but after setting up a shot using the LCD, you could use the OVF to make sure you are aiming exactly where you intended.

So the lessons learned are: 1) pay a few extra dollars and buy from KEH, B&H, or one of the other dealers with a good reputation and a return/warranty policy  2) used 5 to 10 year old consumer electronics are a crapshoot and 3) you may be surprised what a small sensor camera can do.
