Capturing audio of wildlife/birds with a hotshoe mic?

Hey, I just started playing with video and I was wondering if it would be possible to get good audio of say, a bird chirping on a branch 20-50 feet a way with an on camera mic on a hotshoe. Would I be able to get decent result from this? I want to be able to get it so that the subject's noise/chirping/etc is the main focus and clearly audible, but ambient noise is absolutely fine as long as it isn't overpowering.  Photography is my main focus, and I just want to dabble in video, so I'm not willing to have a complicated audio setup.

If this is possible, would a shotgun mic be the best option? Also any recommendations for mics?

I don't know if this is the right forum to ask such questions or if it would be better in the video forum.
