I have used similar settings on my Olympus cameras for several years. I think that the Tone Curve is the main setting as it can make the difference between Black and White and Black and Grey.

One thing though, he mentions that the white balance is not important. I disagree. Adjusting the WB can make a little or a lot of difference. Try manually changing the K setting. Usually, though, I have mine set to Auto.
