I haven't seen any reputable sources that say a non-95 mask will prevent coronavirus spread and protect health care workers or others from mist. In fact, everything I've seen says the opposite - only the N95 does (if properly fitted/worn).

So surgical masks are useless? Source please?

Found a reputable looking source that says more or less the opposite, i.e. there isn't that much difference between a more expensive N95 respirator mask and the standard medical mask.

"Conclusions and Relevance:

Among outpatient health care personnel, N95 respirators vs medical masks as worn by participants in this trial resulted in no significant difference in the incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza."

A Randomized Clinical Trial" https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2749214

The main difference is just whether they are TESTED or not. Can't certify them to N95 if they are not officially tested, but common sense dictates that something is better than nothing.

Well, in the field of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in Europe almost everything has to be tested according to the relevant standards (e.g. in this case DIN EN 149:2001 + A1 2009).

In Europe these respirators usually fall into 3 categories, FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 (FFP for 'Filtering Face Piece'). An N95 mask is almost comparable to our FFP3 mask (the requirement for FFP3 is filtering out 99% of airborne particles; for NIOSH N95 it is 95%).

The simpler surgical masks have to be tested according to EN 14683:2019; the classification is Type I, Type II or Type IIR.
